How does it work?

A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted by the LightSheer diode laser is well absorbed by the pigment located in hair follicles. During the procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, long enough to heat up the hair and significantly impede the follicle’s ability to re-grow. This process also treats numerous hair follicles simultaneously. Therefore, LightSheer is appropriate for treating even the largest areas of the body both quickly and effectively. The beam of laser light targets the pigment contained within the hair follicle below the skin surface. The hair follicles in the active growth phase absorb the most amount of laser energy due to the high concentration of pigment. Optimum removal of all or most hair in a given area requires 3 to 5 sessions which are separated by 4 to 6 week intervals. Some individuals may require more sessions.

What areas can be treated with laser?

Any area, except adjacent to the eye, where there is excess hair can be treated with laser. The most common areas requested are the face, upper lip, neck, chest, periareolar, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs.

Are the results permanent?

The LightSheer laser has been cleared by the FDA for hair removal and permanent hair reduction on all skin types and tanned skin. To achieve a satisfactory level of clearance, 3-5 treatments are typically required.

What does it feel like?

The laser treatment may feel like a mild sting for a fraction of a second. It has a built-in cooling Tip that not only helps to protect the skin but also helps to minimize the discomfort. How long do the treatments take? An upper lip and chin can be done in 10-15 minutes .Underarms or bikini lines usually take 20 minutes. Legs and backs take longer. In contrast, a full back hair removal with electrolysis can take up to and over 125 hours.

How many treatments are necessary?

This is important to understand. Hair goes through 3 stages of development. Typically in the Anagen stage, the hair will respond more effectively to treatment. At any given time, only one third of human hair is in the anagen stage. For this reason, it is necessary to treat an area at least 3 times with the treatments spaced approximately 6 weeks apart in order to see the best and longest lasting results. Darker hair will respond better, but both dark and light hair may need up to 5 treatments for maximum response and the best long-term results.

What are some pre-treatment instructions?

While the process in itself is considered to be very safe, individuals opting for laser hair removal should preferably follow the following pre-treatment tips:

• Laser treatment should be avoided when you have a suntan or sunburn
• Though not necessary, shaving before the treatment quickens treatment time.
• Shaving should be done to a degree where only a shadow or stubble remains visible
• Bleaching or plucking should be stopped for a couple of weeks before the treatment
• If you are likely to suffer from cold sores or have genital herpes, start taking
• appropriate medicines before the treatment

Results-What should you expect?

The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of the procedure and skin type. Side effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling around the hair follicle, which are, in fact, desired clinical results and indicate that the follicle has responded to the treatment. Most people return to normal activity right away.

What are the post-treatment instructions?

It is common to experience redness or bumps after the treatment. A cold compress often helps in this scenario. Apart from this, general precautions to take after laser hair removal treatment include:

• Minimal use of makeup and maximum use of moisturizer
• Use sun block of SPF 25 or more for a couple of weeks after the treatment
• If needed, the only other acceptable hair removal method during the treatment regimen is shaving
• Be aware that hair will continue to shed up to three weeks after the treatment. Help the hairs out by using a loofah or washcloth.

What are the advantages of Laser Hair Removal?

It is important to note that laser hair removal is a non-invasive method of photoepilation, which does not require needles or chemical creams. The advantages of laser hair removal include:

• It is considered to be painless as compared to other methods

What are the limitations/disadvantages of Laser Hair Removal?

Although laser hair removal is an excellent treatment option, some patients may experience hair re-growth. However, this hair is usually finer and lighter in color. Possible side effects, though very rare, may include scars, burns, redness and swelling. The process is also not as effective on unpigmented (gray) hairs and red or blonde hair.

Are there any side effects?

In most cases there are no side effects associated with the procedure. However, pigmentary change of the skin treated can occur, including either dark or light areas. Pigmentary changes may persist for months, but are almost always temporary. They are very rare in patients with fair skin, who are untanned. Blisters and burns are rare, but occasionally occur, particularly in patients with dark skin.
